Aikido is a martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, that focuses on harmonising with your opponent, it can be practiced as a sport, self defence and an art using hand to hand and japanese weapons.

Welcome to the British Aikido Board

The British Aikido Board seeks to:-

Represent the majority of bona fide organisations practicing aikido in the United Kingdom.
Support, encourage and promote the highest standards of aikido within an environment of mutual respect for offering styles practiced.
Raise awareness of the value of aikido not only as a contributor towards healthy living, but also in the development of adults, young people and children, without regard to race, gender or creed.

The British Aikido Board operates primarily through its member Associations. There are 34 currently Full Member Associations with 19 Associate and Probationary Member Associations of regional and national status, who each retain their independence, both technically and financially, with a combined membership of some 5,000 , which includes 805 instructors holding current Coaching Awards.

The Board is recognised by Sport England , as the only governing body for aikido in the United Kingdom and is a member of the Sport and Recreation Alliance.

The Board seeks to further the advancement of all styles of aikido and to establish and monitor standards of safety and behaviour for practitioners of aikido.

The Board advises member Associations on all relevant UK and European legislation and procedures and develops appropriate policies and codes of practice.

Other services provided include:-
• Insurance cover, for members, instructors and Associations.
• Promotion of a Nationally recognised Coaching Scheme in conjunction with UK Coaching / Sport England.
• Organising a National Courses.
• Supporting initiatives to encourage the teaching of Aikido in schools.
• Publishing Newsletters and specialist information bulletins eg. Safeguarding and Coaching.

The Board has completed a number of initiatives, arising from the work of their major Governance Audit and through the adoption of a wide range of recommendations, contained in their Aikido Development Plan will support their key objective of encouraging all Aikido groups to join together under this “Aikido umbrella”.

Brighton Ki Society

History : Master Koichi Tohei was the founder of the Ki Society. He developed Ki training, Kiatsu® and Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido over a lifetime devoted to personal development. Beginning with Hawaii in 1953, he traveled the world to teach Ki Principles and Mind & Body Coordination. His extraordinary performance of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido arts and his masterful teaching inspired students for over 60 years. Shinichi Tohei is the president and chief instructor of the Ki Society. He is a dedicated, life-long student of his father, Ki Society founder Koichi Tohei. He presides at Ki Society HQ in Japan, in charge of teaching, training and the organization in Japan and internationally. Under his dynamic leadership, the Ki Society has grown dramatically. In addition to over 400 dojos in Japan, there are Ki Society branches in 24 countries. Robert MacFarland, Chief Instructor of the Brighton Ki Society, began his study of aikido in 1967. In 1977 he started teaching traditional aikido in Brighton. In 1980 he joined the Ki Society in San Francisco, returning to Brighton to teach Ki principles. He is currently Rokyudan (6th Dan) in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido and Joden in Ki grade. He has full Ki Lecturer and associate examiner status from the Ki Society HQ in Japan.

Style : Principles Everyone can do this The Ki Society provides a variety of programs useful to all ages and abilities. Our membership is diverse – we are neighbors, professionals, students, homemakers, craftsmen, artists, athletes and more. We share a common goal of personal development, to make a positive contribution to our families and communities. Mind and body unification Our lives are comprised of the tangible and the intangible. Body is tangible, mind is intangible. To develop our full potential, we study these aspects of our nature as one unified whole. That which we hold in our mind finds expression in the body. We cannot see the mind directly, yet we can know our state of mind by testing the body using Ki tests. Ki is living energy Ki, like mind, is intangible. It can be described this way: the universe is a collection of infinitely small particles we call Ki. When our mind and body are unified, Ki of the universe flows through us freely. Infinitely small and always in motion, Ki is the root of all things. The Ki Society was founded in 1971 by Koichi Tohei, who developed our training method through a lifetime of study and experience. It is based on the principles of Japanese yoga – otherwise known as Shinshin-toitsu-do (the way of mind and body unification). The common purpose of Ki development and Ki-aikido is to learn how to coordinate mind and body and to apply Ki principles to improve the quality of our daily life.
